The safety of our guests, speakers, staff, partners and the wider Semi Permanent community are of the utmost priority. Covid-19 presents an unparalleled challenge to our community, and so we have postponed our Sydney 2020 event to later in the year (dates to be announced shortly). Semi Permanent Auckland (10-12 September) and Porto (October 30-31) will go ahead as planned, where we are working closely with local governments and venues to monitor the situation and make additional revisions where needed.
So amidst it all, why continue? If I could guess—Semi Permanent events have always unified within uncertainty. Granted, the challenge may have never been so existential, but these windows of time often give way to the most interesting ideas with tangible impact.
To service that, we have a few roles to play. The first is to help curb the spread of the virus so the powers that be can manage it. That meant making some difficult but obvious decisions on postponing our existing program. Further in the long-term, we also want to help lead the renewal of our community amidst a level-playing field for new modes of thought. I’m sure lots of questions will be asked of us when this is all over; big-picture challenges to recalibrate our participation with the world. But we trust our community will start answering some of them towards a more interesting future, and we want to (or will) be there when it happens. But then again, that’s just a guess.
In the meantime, we're working on ways to keep our community active, inspired and participating with each other and the world around them. Expect more from us, and them, soon.
Thank you for your support. Restless times call for restless measures.
